Independent Bookshop Week at Clemo Books

Here at Clemo Books we’re preparing to celebrate our first Independent Bookshop Week on Newquay’s high street, come celebrate with us Saturday 15 – Saturday 22 June.

We’ve got a line-up of activities including an author visit, a late-night shopping event and a young people’s poetry competition to get the community engaged with their local bookshop.

Bookseller Jaimie said:  “Our first Independent Bookshop Week on the high street feels like quite a sentimental milestone. We’re so pleased to be part of the national campaign which champions the importance of bookshops on the high street, highlighting the vibrancy and cultural opportunities they can bring to towns and their communities. The bunting is going up and we hope people get involved with Clemo Books during our first Independent Bookshop Week!”

Tracey Williams Bookshop Visit

Among the celebrations book worms can meet Tracey Williams, author of much acclaimed Adrift: The Curious Tale of The Lego Lost at Sea. Tracey will be in the bookshop signing copies of her book and trying out bookselling for herself on Saturday 15 June, 10:30am until 12:30pm. Bring your own lego finds too if you like!

Clemo Books Young People’s Poetry Competition

Youngsters will also be able to join in with the celebrations and take part in the Clemo Books Young People’s Poetry Competition. Inspired by visiting author Tracey Williams’ beachcombing habits, the brief for the poetry competition is ‘found’ and youngsters have the chance to win gift vouchers. The winning poem will be displayed in the book shop window for people in Newquay to read. You can find out more about this and enter now.

Local writer and poet Lucy Beckley and author Tracey Williams will be judging the poetry competition alongside bookseller Jaimie. The competition is open for entries now and closes midday on Saturday 22 June, the last day of Independent Bookshop Week. Information about the competition can be found on the Clemo Books website. Good luck!

Late Night Shopping

The bookshop will also be staying open for longer on Saturday 15 June with a special late night shopping event to mark the celebratory week. Bubbly will be served with every book purchased as a way of thanking customers for their support since we opened just over 6 months ago.
