Hello from Clemo!

Updated: Nov 6, 2021

Hello from Clemo Books. We’re an independent bookshop popping up in different locations around the town in the run up to Christmas and we can't wait to meet you all.

With no independent bookshop in the town we thought people might like a way to discover new titles or even their new favourite author. We’re bringing the books to you.

Jaimie founder of Clemo Books is a publishing media graduate and excited to meet other local bookworms. Here is what she’s discovered popping up so far!

“Newquay is sorely missing a place to buy books and a space where people can discuss their favourite titles or share recommendations.

The hardest part about the pop ups has been limiting the amount of books as I’m restricted to the size of a table and how much I can carry. There are so many books I think people in Newquay would like to see! So far the most popular titles have been those written by Cornish authors or set in Cornwall - so I’d say there are some proud Cornish folk in the town.”

As well as Cornish authors Clemo Books is offering readers the chance to transport themselves with translation texts, taste new flavours with contemporary cookbooks or learn something new with the latest non-fiction releases.

Little ones can also find a selection of books inspired by the environment and the wildlife that surrounds us. Current children’s literature includes books written by award winning nature writers and Bandoola the story of an elephant from Myanmar. (This is Jaimie’s favourite by far!)

Newquay’s newest bookseller hopes to give residents the opportunity to buy thoughtfully curated books locally and says the shop local campaign has given her the confidence to start up.

“Newquay has an impassioned community of makers and sellers and I believe local people’s consumer conscience is strong, especially following the COVID-19 lockdowns.”

“Whilst the convenience of big online retailers might be appealing, talking to your local bookseller, who also happens to pay her taxes, benefits everyone in the long run!”
