1 year of Clemo Books: a thank you note

Sunday 30 October is Clemo Books first birthday. It’s been a whole year of pop ups, meeting new people and page turners and I just wanted to say thanks.

Since first popping up at Newquay Farmer’s Market in October 2021 Clemo Books has sold hundreds of books, given away over 1,000 book marks and met more book worms than we could have ever imagined in our beautiful town.

I want to extend a massive thank you to all of the local businesses and organisations who have shared their space with this little independent bookshop: Sprout Health Foods, Celtic Lounge Cafe and Newquay Heritage Museum, Sprout Spoken, Newquay Connections at the Killacourts, Newquay Orchard, Alma Artspace at Slow Response Coffee, Limehouse Yoga Studio, Lore of Nature at The Feel Good Space and Sand and Palm’s Yard Sale.

Clemo Books has also had the pleasure of working with and meeting some incredible local authors. From enjoying a books and bunts afternoon with Kris Hallenga author of Glittering a Turd to hosting Charlie Carol on the paperback tour of his gripping Cornish set novel The Lip. To listening to Maia Walczak’s beautiful voice at a children’s storytelling session and taking part in the launch of Naomi and James Jones poignant children’s story The Odd Fish. I’ve been on a dog walk with Tracey Williams author of Adrfift: The Curious Teal of Lego Lost at Sea and had a very fun colouring in session with Cathy, creator of the gorgeous Newquay Colouring Book.

Members of Clemo Club have also grown since it started in January 2022. Our little subscription book club meets once a month to discuss a title and so far we’ve read tales about an artist in lockdown, a gothic Cornish mystery, essays from an 80 year old icon, the thoughts of a queer ghost in a Mallorcan monastery and the story of a 1960’s scientist turned TV presenter. Thank you to all of the members, I really do look forward to seeing you all each month and talking about books - and whatever unexpected topics we veer into!

To my friends and family and the new friends I’ve made along the way thank you for supporting, sharing social media posts and buying books - it means the world and I love seeing your faces at the pop ups.

Finally thank you to Matthew, my co-bookseller and chief box carrier. Thanks for giving me the confidence to start Clemo Books and helping out when it all gets on top of me. You are the best.

Thanks and happy reading,

Jaimie x
